Apex Metalworks required a specialized storage system to handle two primary metal plate sizes. The key objectives were:

  • Dual-Size Capacity: The system needed to accommodate both 4’x8′ (1220×2440mm) and 5’x10′ (1524×3048mm) plates.
  • Forklift Accessibility: Each drawer had to be fully and easily accessible by their standard forklifts to maintain a fast-paced workflow.
  • High-Density Storage: The goal was to maximize vertical space, specifying a total height of 13.1 feet (4000mm) with 20 drawers per unit.

  • 20 drawers per unit (10 upper, 10 lower).
  • 3.74 inches (95mm) of clearance between layers, optimized for plates up to 2 inches thick.
  • Chamfered drawer corners for smooth, snag-free operation.
  • 1.5x safety factor, with each drawer tested to a capacity of 3300 lbs (1500kg).

2. Innovative Modular Base Design

The system features a 507 lbs (230kg) separable base unit with a quick-release mechanism, allowing the base to be detached from the main frame for easier, more cost-effective transportation and installation.
