You invested heavily in a high-kilowatt fiber laser to dominate lead times. But every time that green light turns red because an operator is hunting for a sheet of 12-gauge steel, your ROI drops. Speed on the cutting table is meaningless without speed in material retrieval. Our Sheet metal storage rack keeps pace with your production, acting as a rapid-response material library that ensures your machine spends its time cutting, not waiting.

The New Bottleneck in Fabrication

Ten years ago, the CO2 laser was the bottleneck. It was slow enough that forklift drivers had plenty of time to fetch material. Today, modern 12kW and 20kW fiber lasers cut parts in seconds. The bottleneck has shifted upstream to Material Handling.

If it takes your team 20 minutes to find, unstack, and load a sheet, but the laser only needs 5 minutes to cut it, your expensive machine is idle 80% of the time. You are essentially driving a Ferrari in a traffic jam.

Our rollout rack system reduces that retrieval time to less than 3 minutes. By positioning high-density storage directly adjacent to the loading bay, you create a “Pit Stop” efficiency model.

Stop Using Skilled Labor as Forklift Drivers

Your laser programmer and operator are likely some of the highest-paid technicians on your floor. Why are you paying them to drive a forklift or wait for one?

In a traditional shop, when a machine needs material, the operator has to:

  1. Stop the machine.
  2. Walk to find the forklift driver (who is busy unloading a truck).
  3. Wait.
  4. Supervise the dig for material.

With a dedicated Sheet metal storage rack next to the laser, the operator becomes self-sufficient. They can crank out the required drawer, lift the sheet with a jib crane or vacuum lifter, and load the machine immediately. The flow is continuous, and the “Wait Time” waste is eliminated.

Agility for “High-Mix” Production

The modern job shop survives on agility. You might switch from mild steel to stainless to aluminum five times a day. Static floor storage makes this a logistical nightmare.

Our dynamic drawer system allows for rapid changeovers. You can stage the materials for the morning’s schedule in the rack. When one nest is finished, the next material type is instantly accessible. This agility allows you to take on rush orders and short-run prototypes without destroying your daily throughput.

Reducing “WIP” (Work in Progress) Clutter

Often, shops will bring huge pallets of material to the laser just to avoid multiple forklift trips. This clutters the workspace with Work in Progress (WIP) and excess raw material, creating trip hazards and blocking flow.

Vertical racking allows you to keep a significant buffer of stock right at the point of use, but without the footprint sprawl. You get the benefit of bulk stock availability with the tidiness of a lean manufacturing cell.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can the rack be positioned close to the laser?
Yes. Because the drawers extend out, you don’t need the wide turning radius of a forklift. You can place the rack very close to the machine’s loading table, serviced by a simple jib crane or gantry suction lifter.

2. Can I load the rack from the back?
We offer “Dual Access” or Rear-Loading models. This allows your forklift driver to restock the rack from the aisle side, while the machine operator picks material from the machine side, ensuring traffic paths never cross.

3. Does this work for automated loading systems?
While our racks are manual/crank-out, they are the perfect partner for semi-automated vacuum lifters. For fully automated storage towers, we offer different solutions, but our crank-out racks are the most cost-effective way to boost efficiency without a million-dollar automation price tag.

4. How much weight can a single drawer hold?
Our standard heavy-duty drawers are rated for 3,000 kg to 5,000 kg (6,600 to 11,000 lbs). This is sufficient for full bundles of thick plate steel.

5. Will the rack fit 6×12 (2m x 4m) sheets?
Yes, we have specific models designed for large format fiber lasers that use 6×12 sheets. We ensure the drawer depth and structural support are engineered to prevent any sagging of these large plates.
